Research

he Department of Animal and Food Sciences focuses on a diverse range of research areas related to animals, their products, and food production. These areas include:

  1. Animal Product Technology: This research area involves studying the various processes and technologies related to the transformation of animal products, such as meat and dairy, from raw materials to finished goods, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Animal Genetics and Breeding: The field explores the genetic makeup of animals, aiming to enhance desirable traits through selective breeding to improve the overall quality, productivity, and health of animal populations.
  • Ruminant Management: This research area investigates the management practices and strategies for animals with a specialized stomach structure, like cattle and sheep. It encompasses aspects of nutrition, health, and husbandry to optimize their well-being and productivity.
  • Aquaculture: Researchers in aquaculture focus on the cultivation of aquatic organisms, such as fish and shellfish, in controlled environments. The aim is to develop sustainable practices that ensure efficient production while minimizing environmental impact.
  • Non-Ruminant Management: Non-ruminant animals like poultry and swine are the focus of this research area. It involves studying their nutrition, housing, disease management, and overall welfare to achieve optimal production outcomes.
  • Micro Livestock Production: Micro livestock, which includes small animals, play a role in food production and sustainability. Research in this area explores the potential of these organisms for protein and nutrient production.
  • Food Science and Technology: This field involves the study of various aspects of food, including its composition, preservation, processing, and safety. Researchers aim to develop innovative techniques to improve the quality and shelf life of food products.
  • Food and Nutrition: This research area focuses on the nutritional content and value of different food items, exploring how they impact human health and well-being. It also involves developing dietary recommendations and strategies for better nutrition.
  • Dairy Technology: Researchers in dairy technology work on optimizing the production, processing, and distribution of dairy products. This includes studying milk composition, developing new dairy products, and ensuring their quality.
  1. Post-harvest Technology: This area addresses the preservation and processing of agricultural products after they’ve been harvested. Researchers develop methods to extend shelf life, reduce losses, and maintain the quality of perishable goods.

Overall, the Department of Animal and Food Sciences covers a wide spectrum of research topics, all contributing to the advancement of animal production, food quality, and sustainable agricultural practices.
